An AI Team of Asia University Attends the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference in the USA.---

Asia University President, Jeffrey J. P. Tsai, leads an AI team to the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference in the USA to understand the newest developments of AI industries.

Asia University (AU) President, Jeffrey J. P. Tsai, and an AI team attended the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference in the USA.

Asia University (AU) President, Jeffrey J. P. Tsai, led a team of Artificial Intelligence (AI) faculty members to attend the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference (GTC) on March 17 at Silicon Valley in the USA. The team members included the director of the AI Research Center and a chair professor of AU, Zon-Yin Shae; a section director of the center, Dr. Chao-Neng Wang; and two associate professors from the Computer Science and Information Engineering Department, Hsueh-Ting Chu, and Wei-Chih Shen. The conference invited AI experts from both industry and academy fields, and focused on the new developing trends of AI. This conference is one of the biggest events in the AI field; through the participations, the members of AU were able to understand the current status and developments of the AI technology in the future generation.

The annual NVIDIA GTC held more than 600 events and attracted about 9000 participants gathering together in Silicon Valley in California, USA. During the conference, NVIDIA not only assigned the founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, as one of the conference speakers, but also invited representatives of world-famous companies (including Amazon, Alibaba, Google, NASA, IBM, Verizon, Volvo, and PayPal) to participate in this conference. In the speech, the NVIDIA founder, Jensen Huang, mentioned that recently not only the NVIDIA Omniverse has a new breakthrough in the image processing technology, but also the NVIDIA Clara AI Platform can be applied on assisting early detection of diseases and car self-driving applications. So far, the NVIDIA Company already succeeded to combine the new technology of AI with various industrial applications, and the goal is to bring the industry to a new level in the future with the AI technology.

AU President, Jeffrey J. P. Tsai, took a photo with the speaker of the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference Dr. Eric Topol who is a fellow of the National Academy of Medicine.

The GTC Conference invited Dr. Eric Topol who is a fellow of the National Academy of Medicine of the USA, a world-famous cardiologist, a geneticist, and a digital medical researcher, to share his professional experiences with the audience. Dr. Eric indicated that the AI technology could be one of the best solutions to solve certain increasingly serious issues of medical insurance, and he also discussed how AI and deep learning bring different levels of influences to medicine fields. From respective views, the solutions or influences can be divided into three sections: (1) for clinical staffs, they can interpret medical images more efficiently and precisely; (2) for medical insurance systems, AI can reduce erroneous diagnosis results and improve medical procedures; (3) for patients, they can manage their personal medical data through AI to keep themselves healthy. Furthermore, in the new published book of Dr. Eric entitled “Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again,” he pointed out that “… AI will create space for the real healing that takes place between a doctor who can listen and a patient who needs to be heard..."

The NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference attracted about 9,000 participants gathering together in the Silicon Valley of the USA.

In 1999, the NVIDIA Company invented fast GPUs for deep learning. The deep learning function of this type of GPU conduce the next-generation computing technology – leading to the development of modern AI. Since then, the GPU has become a brain of the computer, robot, and self-driving car because with the help of AI software, it can perceive and sense the surrounding. Another application of the GPU in the healthcare field is to use the deep-learning neural network implemented with the GPU to find useful clues through MRI images after millions of medical imaging training of the network. In fact, the contributions of the NVIDIA Company have been affirmed by a number of prestigious institutions. The Founder and CEO of the NVIDIA, Jensen Huang, was elected as one of the Fortune’s Businesspersons of the Year in 2017 in the category of Best CEOs, as well as one of the World’s Best-Performing CEOs elected by the Harvard Business Review, In the meantime, the NVIDIA company also was elected as one of the 50 Smartest Companies by the MIT Technology Review.

Now, AU is the only collaboration university of the NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute (DLI) in central Taiwan. AU also assigned a number of professors to take the training courses offered by NVIDIA. The aim is to bring the newest trends and technologies of AI to students after finishing the courses. Last year, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at AU collaborated with the Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology Departments of the China Medical University Hospital to set up a team to participate the NVIDIA GPU Technology Competition. And the team won the best paper award on the research topic of “Using deep learning to analyze positron emission tomography images of pre-treatment patients with cervical cancer to predict the risk of local recurrence after combined treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.” Moreover, the professors of AU guided a group of AU students to attend pre-contest competition of the AI Cup which is an activity held by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, with the goal of arousing their interests of AI researches. It is expected that more and more AI experts could be cultivated by AU in the near future!

The founder and CEO of NIVIDIA, Jensen Huang, gave a speech in the NIVIDIA GPU Technology Conference.

AU President, Jeffrey J. P. Tsai, took a photo at the venue of the NIVIDIA GPU Technology Conference in Silicon Valley, California, USA.

A Fellow of National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Eric Topol spoke in the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference.
